Achievements and Performance 2015
The school received its new 17 seater minibus from Variety Children’s Charity, which is allowing the school to increase the number of learners that can be taken out for educational visits.
One extended educational visit took place during the year, which extended and enriched the experiences of out learners. Six pupils from years 8 to 11 flew with staff to Centre Algarve, a state of the art holiday resort built in Portugal specifically for learners with disabilities. In Portugal, learners had the opportunitiy to browse shops and visit the local harbour, providing an excellent opportunitiy for learners to develop and foster communication and interpersonal skills, whilst learning about another country and culture. They also got to use the excellent facilities at Centre Algarve, which included specially designed swimming pools and kitchen areas to promote learner independence, as well as a small petting zoo. The trip was a tremendous success due to the hard work of Southview School Staff involved in arranging and taking the learners away, and the positive attitudes of all the learners.
The School Fund’s focus was on purchasing mobile sensory equipment to be used by classes, which led to the purchase of Interactive Flooring and SoundBeam. The Interactive Flooring works through projecting an image onto the floor which responds to learner contact and movement, so an image of water would ripple when learners interacted with it. SoundBeam in an award-winning touch free device which uses sensor technology to translate body movement into music and sounds and is used in conjunction with the Flooring for a multi-sensory experience. Teachers have found these a valuable, adaptable tool for use in teaching, physical development and therapy.
