Hello and welcome to the Primary Phase! This phase is made up of the Sunshine, Stars and Rainbow Classes. As part of a broad and balanced curriculum we use a range of communication systems in order to develop learners into spontaneous and functional communicators. In Nursery we spend lots of time working and playing with the children to learn about how they naturally communicate and what they like. We use objects of reference, pictures and symbols.
In Juniors and Infants those using Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) are taught to use pictures to be able to request desired items, before moving on to learn how to respond to questions and to use more complex language. Some of our learners use communication boards and books or switches in order to communicate. Many learners will be able to move onto high-tech devices. Signing is used across the day in order to aid learners’ understanding. In Primary Phase we believe that it is not how you communicate but the fact that you have that should be celebrated. For learners who are verbal we use a range of strategies in order to develop and extend their speech.
We enjoy developing our physical skills by using standing frames, walkers and other equipment as much as possible. We encourage each other to be independent, doing as much for ourselves as we can. We always strive to create a happy and positive learning environment, where each individual is given confidence, time and space to express themselves. We use positive reinforcement to encourage our learners to make sensible behavioural choices by themselves. Sensory needs are always taken into account. We are proud of our achievements and have fun every day.
