Complex Needs / PMLD

PMLD Curriculum Vision

Intention

At Southview we aim to ensure all our pupils will have access to a curriculum that best meets their individual needs and abilities.

For those pupils who have PMLD and additional complex needs, this means a curriculum that includes;

  • Developing early learning skills
  • Supporting and encouraging engagement in learning
  • Sensory based learning
  • Focus on early communication and interaction skills.
  • Cognition and learning
  • Physical needs
  • Self-care and Independence

Implementation

Based on current best practice and research from experts in teaching PMLD and SLD, it is commonly acknowledged that young people with identified PMLD and complex needs require different approaches to curriculum delivery as their needs are vastly different.   This means that a subject based approach is not appropriate.

To support pupils learning, PMLD learners will follow a curriculum based on developing;

  • Cognition and learning
  • Communication and interaction
  • Physical and sensory needs
  • Self-care and independence.

The Southview PMLD curriculum areas will include

  • Communication & Interaction
  • Sensory Exploration
  • Physical & Sensory World
  • Health & Well Being
  • The Wider World
  • Creative World.

Impact

Due to the individual and complex needs of our young people, we need to recognise where they are, where they need to be and the best way to reach this.

We use of range of formative assessment tools available, which better reflect their areas of developmental need, progress and milestone achievements.  This will be reflected in areas on pupils EHCP’s and enable targets to be more specific to needs.

  • Quest for Learning: to support and enable development in communication and cognition.
  • Switch Progression: to support and enable development related to ICT access to communication.
  • Positive Looking: for CVI and MSI pupils to support and enable development in use of visual field.

These allow for bespoke interventions to be included within the PMLD Foundation Curriculum.

Summative assessment is measured through progression on specific EHCP areas.
