The remote curriculum: what is taught to pupils at home
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching. Please find class timetables of remote education for classes below.
What should my child expect from immediate remote education in the first day or two of pupils being sent home?

Where appropriate, pupils will have work sent home that they can complete independently in the first instance. For the vast majority of our pupils, they are fully dependent on Parents and Carers in order to access tasks set; due to their complex learning and medical needs. The Class Teacher will liaise with Parents and Carers to put in place a comprehensive remote offer tailored to the individual overall needs of individual pupils. This may include full class sessions, small group sessions or more bespoke 1:1 sessions. Relevant work will continue to be sent home for pupils to complete, where appropriate. Where possible, some therapy sessions may also still be available and the school has made efforts to offer Yoga and Music Therapy sessions to pupils. |
Following the first few days of remote education, will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

At Southview, our pupils benefit from a Holistic approach to learning. We teach the same curriculum remotely as we do in school wherever possible and appropriate. The individual needs of each pupil and their family are considered fully, and adaptations to individual’s timetables are made where necessary. For many of our pupils, a large percentage of their normal school timetable consists of different therapeutic interventions delivered by a range of professionals. |
Remote teaching and study time each day
How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?
Due to the individual needs of our pupils our expectations are that pupils engage with our remote offer as much as possible; appropriate to needs, and family circumstances. As previously stated, for the vast majority of our pupils, they are fully dependent on Parents and Carers in order to access tasks set due to their complex needs.
The majority of classes offer at least daily morning and afternoon Zoom sessions for pupils; and work is sent home alongside this where appropriate. More details of individual class timetables are available on the website.
Accessing remote education
How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?
Teaching sessions will be delivered via Zoom, with invite and meeting details sent to Parents and Carers beforehand.
If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?
We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:
Work is printed and sent home by teachers on a regular basis. Home-School Liaison staff are able to deliver resources and are a further point of contact and support for families.
The school has a lending programme for laptops and more information can be obtained by contacting the Class Teacher or the school office on 013706 503505. Alternatively, Hollie, our ICT Technician is available to support with any technological issues.
Work can be submitted online or can be posted to us. Please contact the school office for more information.
How will my child be taught remotely?
We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:
The majority of our remote offer is live teaching, although some recordings of lessons may be used by teachers. Appropriate resources are sent out to parents and carers ahead of sessions, particularly for sensory learning and communication sessions e.g Tacpac.
Textbooks, printed paper packs and commercially available websites may be used to support learning in individual classes.
Engagement and feedback
What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?
Our expectations are that pupils engage with our remote offer as much as possible, dependent on individual needs and family circumstances. We fully appreciate the logistical challenges that many of our Parents and Carers face supporting their children during this time, and the considerable pressures put upon them. As a school, we strive to support our families as much as possible.
How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?
The Class Teacher will be in regular contact with pupils and their families in order to monitor engagement and wellbeing. Every Teacher keeps a weekly record of individual engagement for all pupils and where engagement is a concern, parents and carers are supported by the Class Teacher to try and improve this. The Senior Leadership Team have an overview of weekly engagement and make necessary interventions as appropriate.
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
Feedback is provided to pupils in a variety of different ways, appropriate to individual needs. This might include individual feedback on work submitted, whole class feedback or feedback to Parents and Carers. Many Parents and Carers are involved supporting their children during their learning, and feedback to them is vital. Pupils’ progress is always mapped against their EHCP targets and teachers plan and monitor work set dependent on progress made. This will be used as a framework to structure the curriculum upon a full return to school.
Remote education for self-isolating pupils
Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.
If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?
Their remote education will be consistent with the school offer.
